What Were The Peak Years For Gen X Music?

Gen X is generally thought to be the generation born between 1965 and 1980.

But a rousing discussion around the peak years of Gen X, especially pertaining to music that was uniquely “ours” popped up on Reddit about 6 years ago.

Memories from a guy who ran a record store in the 90’s to other Gen Xers trying to hone in on the sweet spot of our generation’s musically productive years ensued. In this discussion, people are talking about 1988-1998 with the peak years between 1991 and 1994.

“I ran a music store for most of the 1990s.

Honestly, as much as Gen X likes to think the 80s were about us, the Boomers were the tastemakers for the first half of the decade.

It really wasn’t until about 1988 that our music, chosen by us, became dominant. We peaked between ’91 and ’94 and by 1998 the Millennials and their buying power were calling the shots. The staff at my store (who were all stereotypical Gen X record store employees) called it as soon as the kids started requesting Britney Spears and then Backstreet Boys. Our store charts shifted almost overnight from Radiohead, Bjork and Foo Fighters to endless teen pop. tl;dr – I call it 1988 to 1998.”

Some great points were made that I agree with for the most part. But we also had some moments in the fringes of the 70s, 80s, and 90s in music that I consider fully Gen X music. Yet, the peak years were solidly in the ’88 to ’94 range imo.

Beastie Boys gave us a license to ill and a soundtrack that dotted Gen X years with unforgettable memories.

Hair Metal Could So Easily Make a Comeback – Hear Me Out

Something gnarly happened on AGT last year that I don’t think many heavy metal enthusiasts caught. At first, when the band came out on stage I was prepared to be offended. I thought they would make fun of it, or that they weren’t from the X generation.

When the camera zoomed in, I saw something unexpected: these dudes looked like Gen Xers. Like they played back in the day and, somehow, were still playing. Steel Panther, with 6 studio albums, a DVD, and a couple decades of touring came on the AGT stage and blew everyone away. I was surprised how the audience reacted. They clearly love to rock and recognized an essential nutrient was missing from their listening diet once the band was finished.

Anyway, watch the audience reaction to this band and tell me glam rock and heavy metal can’t make a popular comeback! These guys are good, but they also have kind of a comedy act to their shows. Wonder what exposure to a Bon Jovi-style “Cowboy” anthem would have done to that crowd!

About Steel Panther

Steel Panther is actually a relatively young band, formed in Los Angeles in 2000. While their music and image are heavily influenced by the glam metal scene of the 80s, they didn’t hit the scene until the turn of the millennium.

They’re known for their outrageous stage presence, parody lyrics that poke fun at the glam metal lifestyle, and catchy, sing-along tunes. Think spandex, big hair, and tongue-in-cheek anthems about partying, girls, and all things rock n’ roll.

It was the beginning of the end of hair metal and glam bands. When this aired, all bets were off. Grunge announced itself it the most hardcore way. Like waking up at 6 am on a Saturday to the sound of jackhammers. Undeniable, and the perfect match to our attitude at the time.

For the kids: When grunge hit the scene

The arrival of grunge on the mainstream scene, fueled by bands like Nirvana’s Letterman and MTV appearances, was a cultural earthquake. Here’s a taste of what it was like:

Music:

A tidal wave of distortion and rawness: Grunge’s distorted guitars, sludgy bass, and powerful drumming starkly contrasted the polished pop and hair metal dominating the airwaves. It felt refreshingly real and visceral, expressing frustration, alienation, and angst.
Anti-hero energy: Nirvana’s ragged clothes, Cobain’s sardonic humor, and their overall “don’t give a damn” attitude challenged the polished personas of rock stars. It was cool to be uncool, and fans loved it.
A message for a generation: Grunge lyrics tackled personal struggles with depression, social anxieties, and questioning authority, resonating deeply with disillusioned youth who felt ignored by the mainstream. Songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became anthems.
